Double Chooz

Brussels to Givet by car

The easiest way to get to Chooz from the US is to fly into Brussels, rent a car, and drive to Givet.  Except in the few kilometers between the airport and the E411 highway away from Brussels, the traffic is generally moderate to light.    Please note that on your return to the Brussels airport, you should get off the highway just before entering the airport, at the little town of Zaventem.  Go along the main street for a couple of blocks and you'll find a convenient gas station.

Mapquest actually does a good job for this route, here's a link to Mapquest's driving directions (but note that the origin is from a street in Zaventem near the airport, since I had problems getting Mapquest to use a european airport as a start/end point). I'll mostly just be adding some commentary.

  1. About 2km after you exit the airport,  you want the "to A0" ramp going south toward E411/NAMEN/NAMUR.   Note that near Brussels many of the names are paired flemish/french.   For example: Namen/Namur.   Watch out, the roads right at between the airport and the A0 are a tangled mess, and it's easy to get confused.  Namen/Namur is the destination to keep in mind at this point.
  2. You'll merge onto the A22, then  exit on the left onto the A0 in the E411/NAMEN/NAMUR direction.  You only stay on the A0 for ~10km before it turns into a wide city street.  Keep to the center or left.   This is the area where there's most likely to be heavy traffic.
  3. Take the E411 toward  NAMEN/NAMUR/LUXEMBURG  (I recall it as being a left turn at a traffic light, Mapquest thinks it's a "merge". We'll see) ...you'll be on it for ~75km
  4. Get off the E411 at exit 20, and take the N97 toward Dinant, you'll go about 16 km, including a spectacular crossing of the Meuse on a bridge high above Dinant.  The exit is soon after the bridge
  5. Exit to the left at the village of Onhaye on N936. My memory is that you have to drive a few blocks through the center of the village (heading west) to catch N936 going south just outside Onhaye's west side.  Mapquest thinks you can exit N97 at N936 without going through Onhaye.
  6. Take N936 going south, it will first be meandering through farm fields, then heading downhill through forest as it nears the Meuse.
  7. N936 dead-ends at Rue D'Antee, turn left toward Hastière.
  8. You'll cross N51 within a kilometer, and within sight of the Meuse.  Turn right on N51.
  9. Just continue on N51 south along the Meuse river until you reach Givet. You'll go through central Givet and finally wind up at the river. If you're going to the Chateau,  cross the Meuse at the brige (see terminal guidance instructions here), otherwise continue on N51 south along the river for a block to the Hotel le val St. Hilaire.
