Double Chooz

From CDG to Givet by car

I've tried to refine these directions by Mapquest, but they keep giving routes that send you off into Belgium, or on tiny little roads that I know aren't a very good route.  (Scenic, though).

I've heard that one efficient route is by major highway directly from CDG toward Brussels, then joining the Brussels to Givet route outside of Brussels.  It certainly avoids the traffic around Paris, and that's good.

Old route

  1. Out of CDG, A1 toward Paris for a very short distance (< 5km)
  2. take the ramp for A104/MARNE LA VALLÉE/SARCELLES/Z.I.PARIS-NORD II/PARC DES EXPOSITIONS direction
  3. A104 runs along N2 for a few km, but stay on A104 when they split.  Total distance on A104 is about 30km.
  4. take the A4 towards  METZ-NANCY/REIMS/MARNE LA VALLÉE-VAL D'EUROPE. This is a toll road.  You'll know you're going the right way when you pass the entrance to Disneyland Europe.
  5. Go past central Reims, then take exit 26 onto N244 north towards Rethel.
  6. N244 quickly becomes A34 (~2km) and then joins N51/E46 (~10km). Continue to Charleville-Mézières.
  7. Take E44 around Charleville-Mézières to the west, then continue west on N43/N51 for about 10km where D8051 splits off to the north.  Continue on D8051 toward Rocroi/Fumay
  8. Continue north on D8051 through a series of small towns (including the outskirts of Chooz). It will take you through Givet right in front of the Hotel le val St. Hilaire
  9. If you're going to the Chateau, continue along the river in Givet (on the west bank), then cross over to the east bank at the large bridge in central Givet.
  10. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn right and head south along the river; the road curves away from the river, but stay on the main road.  You'll soon be in what is obviously "suburbia".  Look for a street to the right (Rue L'Aviette) with an elementary school near the corner, and turn right to pass next to the school.
  11. Keep the speed down at this point, or you'll anger the locals.
  12. You quickly lose the houses (~100m) and be in fields as the road curves around a bit, generally toward the south.  You enter a forest after about 1km,  and about 50m later
  13. there's a turnoff to the right which puts you at the Chateau. There's a sign that says "No access, private" (in French).  That's for everyone else.
And, for your driving pleasure, here's a map to help you get from central Givet to the Chateau (note that N51 on this map has been renumbered as D8051):
Givet to Chateau

Alternate route

This is the one that tends to be favored by Mapquest and the like.  I don't know whether it's faster, on a recent trip from Givet to CDG, we timed the trip as taking 3 hours and 30 minutes, with no stops along the way.  (Note: in France the `Axx' highway numbers get preference; in Belgium the `Exx' numbers get preference. I list the other as well, since while you take the exit labeled 'E411', the distance markers are labeled 'A4' so it's good to be aware of both forms.)

  1. Exit CDG going away from Paris on the A1(E15) (in the Lille direction)
  2. Continue on the A1(E19)  for about 20-30 km, until the A2 splits off. I'm not sure what the signs will say, but you want to the north, toward Cambrai, Reims, etc.
  3. You stay on the A2 to the Belgian border, after which the number changes to E19+E42(A7).
  4. Stay on the E19+E42(A7) until around La Louvière, about 25km, then take the E42 when it splits from E19. At this point it becomes the E42(A15).
  5. In about 10km, you have an option:
    1. Take the R3 south around Charleroi, then (at exit 8)  take the N5 south 20km to Phillipville, the left on N40, 20km to Givet. I've never taken this route, so you're on your own
    2. Continue on E42(A15) until it meets E411(A4), then take E411(A4) southeast in the direction of Namur
  6. At this point you join up with the route from Brussels to Givet, close to the first Namur exit.
