Amsterdam to Givet by car
I recently had a chance to try this route, when my travel agent found
out that a ticket to Schiphol (Amsterdam's airport) was significantly
cheaper than one to Brussels or CDG.
Summary: it's a fairly easy
drive, good highway all the way from Schiphol down to Brussels, then
follow the Brussels route. Total driving time from Schiphol to
Givet was 3 hours, with a bit over 2 hours in getting to Brussels.
One nice feature about this drive is that you get to Brussels
after the morning rush hour has subsided. The traffic was
generally pretty moderate, even around Amsterdam at 8:30AM on a Monday
morning.
- Exiting Schiphol airport, take A4 toward Amsterdam. I think this is the "default" airport exit. You only stay on A4 for about 2km, so stay alert!
- Next step is to get on the A9 toward Utrecht. Take this for about 20km, then follow the signs for Utrecht, exiting on the A2.
- After about 50km, when you're getting near Utrecht, you merge onto the A27 that is heading toward Breda
- After about 80km, near Breda, you merge left onto the A16 toward Antwerpen. The map says that this short spur is actually A58, but the signs clearly point you to A16 and Antwerp.
- The (Netherlands) A16 turns into the (Belgian) A1. Also called the E19. Follow the A1/E19 through Antwerp and through to Brussels. It's about 100km on this leg.
- On the outskirts of Brussels, you merge toward the left onto the R0
ring road around Brussels. Here you can actually follow the signs
toward the Zaventum airport, since you'll actually pass right next to
the Zaventum exit. Look for the E411 toward Namen, and you can take the "Brussels to Givet" directions from this point onward.
Another useful bit of information for returning your rental car at Schiphol: there's a Shell located on the
A9
about 10km before the exit for the airport that is quite convenient for
that "top up" before turning in your car. There may be closer
stations, but I think this one may be the easiest to find.
